UPCOMING EVENTS:
Forecasting course taught by Michelle Gould, beginning on Jan 8 for $400.
In June, Avalon will start offerring a set of intensive courses for Astrologers. They will be teaching astronomy, ancient methods, and other subjects, taught in five day intensives every seven weeks. In between students will read and study the material for the upcoming class, culminating in the intensive weekend. All these courses help fulfill the requirements for the ISAR exam. It's also a great opportunity to meet and hang out with your peers!
TOPIC:
PLUTO!!!!!
Talk by David Cochrane.
Beginning with the Wikipedia file on Pluto. Discovered in 1930 by Clyde Tombaugh.
The eccentricity and the inclination make it very different. The orbit is an extremely elongated elipse. The sun being at one of the dual focuses of the eliptic orbit. The extremely skinny elipse means that the dual focii are further apart than the other less skinny planetary orbits. Sometimes it comes very close to the sun, and during those times it comes within Neptune's orbit. Pluto has recently transitted Scorpio, and is approaching Capricorn. It is moving it's fasest: 14 years thru a sign. When it is at the other end of its orbit and slowing down, it is 28 years thru a sign. During this period, it will approach Taurus. The other objects that have skinny orbits are more like asteroids or comets. Planets in general have a rounder orbit. Pluto also has a very high inclination, not in the same plane as the other planets. Most of the planets are within 6 degrees of being in the eliptic plane. Pluto, on the other hand is up to 17 degrees inclined. It is far away, highly eliptic, small, and highly inclined - all characteristics of comets and other objects.
Modern psychological astrology says that personal planets are the inner planets and the transcendental impersonal planets are the outer planets. David says that Pluto is a VERY DIFFERENT BEAST from Neptune and Uranus, and so it is already an outsider. It is very physically different.
Also, Neptune and Pluto are the only planet whose orbits are synchronized. Neptune basically controls the dance. They are synchronized for about a million years, according to astronomers. Everytime Neptune makes three orbits, Pluto makes two. Their orbits are very closely related and return to the same point in the sky every 500 years. Rob Hand speculates that Neptune and Pluto are somehow tied together astrologically due to this physical relationship.
Additionally, the other different thing about Pluto is that it is part of a family of objects. There are a bunch of asteroids, of “friends” that are with it. About a few hundred thousand. The Kuiper belt. Pluto exists in a belt of many many thousands of objects just outside the orbit of Neptune. Pluto IS a Kuiper belt object. The other asteroid belt being the “asteroid” belt between Mars and Jupiter. These are the commonly known asteroids. In the Kuiper belt, there are many different and unusual objects. There are some Kuiper belt objects called Plutinos that move at about the same speed as Pluto. Pluto seems right now to be the largest of the Plutinos. There are many many other kinds of objects and they are discovering more all the time. As well, Pluto and it's moon are more of a binary system, revolving around each other, and not so much a regular planet/moon relationship.
Basically, the solar system is no longer black and white. The universe is now more confusing. The solar system is now more like a spectrum of objects, rather than objects existing in neat agreed-upon permanent categories. The definition of the word planet is no longer as clear as it was 30 years ago.
It would seem that we are doing astrology based on astronomy from over 100 years ago. David gave an example using the four 'major' asteroids. That they were only the first ones discovered, not the largest, and thus not the 'major' asteroids.
Einstein discovered the theory of relativity in 1902. It took a very long time to incorporate a different view of physics - thirty or forty years - into the general stream. This is now happenning in astronomy and astrology. The idea of planet is no longer so defined.
NOW, THE ASTROLOGY…..
David went into the Kepler software looking for charts of people with strong Pluto. He did it with the Astro-signature research feature in Kepler. He picked the hard aspects of the inner planets to Pluto with a 2 degree orb. Then searched the Famous People database. Then he got a list of famous people with the parameters he set.
He then picked three of the people in the list and did their charts. Then, he read their biographies on Wikepedia to see how their lives matched their charts.
William Butler Yeats
June 13, 1865
10:40pm
Dublin, Ireland
Venus/Pluto conjunction square Mars in the seventh. He apparently had compulsive, irrational relationships with women, according to the Wikepedia bio. He had a life long interest in mysticism, spiritualism, occultism and astrology. He is living at the time when Theosophy is booming. He is involved with the Golden Dawn and Aleister Crowley. He meets Maud Gonne in 1889, and developed an “obsessive infatuation” with her. She had a lasting effect on him and on his poetry for the rest of his life. His love for her was unrequited, but he carried a torch for her for many years. The reality of their love turned out to be very unfulfilling, but the obsession remained.
Mary Tyler Moore
December 29, 1936
10:45am
Brooklyn, NY
Moon/Pluto conjunction in the fifth, also opposition Mercury and square Mars in the eighth. The general consensus was that her chart showed great talent, passion, drive, reflected in the fact that Mary Tyler Moore Show was produced for as long as it was with the high quality, the intensity, the sheer hard work.
The Moon /Mercury opposition David associates with the wisdom of the Soul. The nature of the everyday all-American girl appeal was possibly a manifestation of that energy. Additionally, her personal life events reflected Pluto very strongly. She has highly opinionated views that she then acts upon (Mars). Additionally, Mars in the eighth squaring the Pluto/Moon in the fifth, connects the house of death with her child - who was killed in a gun accident. There were many events having to do with death and mortality around her personal life.
Jack Benny
February 14, 1984
4:04am
Waukegan, Illinois
Moon/Pluto conjunction in the fifth, square Mercury in the second.
Jack Benny was a well known American comedian. He was very famous for The Jack Benny Show, and was also known for his wartime USO shows. We looked at Jack, Rochester, race and Judaism, and got to examine some of our own history and we thought Plutonian thoughts. David felt that Jack was venting his plutonian energy thru his perfoming.
THEN….
We looked at Katarina's and David's Plutonian aspects, and much interesting discussion ensued.
