2/21/07: SIRIUS ASTROLOGY GROUP MEETING

Note: Mercury was retrograde for this meeting. Fei normally keeps minutes during the meetings, but unfortunately she was sick and could not make it. It was only after the meeting had concluded that we realized no one else had kept the minutes, so the notes here are a little sparse.

February 21, 2007: Sirius meeting resumed around 7:05pm

Attendees: David, Gina, Lori, Lynn, Gary, Katarina, and Suqui

Since many of the attendees were not able to attend the January meeting, we started by reviewing the new meeting format and ideas from that meeting.

Gary was responsible for presenting research about the Sun. Gary provided a PowerPoint presentation and handouts of his slides.

The Sun is...

  • Considered by the ancients to be a planet
  • Considered with the moon to be a "luminary"
  • According to They Might Be Giants:
"The Sun is a mass of incandescent gas..."
  • 93 million miles away
    (1 astronomical unit "au")
  • 1 million earths could fit inside
    (but considered a medium-sized star)

Gary started by indicating that he is an astrology hobbiest that got into astrology through researching relationships. His research was based on The Only Way To Learn Astrology, Volume I: Basic Principles by Marion D. March and Joan McEvers, The Astrologer's Handbook by Frances Sakoian and Louis S. Acker, Astrology For The Light Side of the Brain by Kim Rogers Gallagher, and Wikipedia on the Internet. He briefly described what the Sun is physically.

The Sun: Basic Meanings 1

  • March & McEvers:
    • Your inner self, your personality, your ego
  • Sakoian & Acker:
    • Most important single factor in horoscope
    • Way we express basic energy potential and creative drive to grow and develop as an individual
    • The stage of growth represented by an individual’s present incarnation (and the lessons he must master)
    • The dynamic expression of the will (manifested through the activity of the other planets)

Gary indicated the Sun was "the will" or "the ego". David and Katarina rephrased this as what you're most comfortable being. Gina also mentioned the Sun's actions were what gives you the most joy.

The Sun: Basic Meanings 2

  • Rogers-Gallagher
    • Your raison d’etre or "reason for being", basic motivation
    • All other planets "take orders" from the Sun
    • Maturity is "learning" your sun, gradually "growing into" the person you’re supposed to be
    • Represents your Yang energy (the "masculine" side of us)
    • Good indicator of relationship with Dad (where masculine energy equates with self-assertion)
    • Associated with the element gold (also "AU")

In discussing the basic meanings, the group brought up the charts of David and Katarina for discussion.

The Sun: Basic Meanings 3

  • Wikipedia (additional information)
    • Associated with Sunday
    • Chinese: the Yang: the active, assertive masculine life principle
    • Indian: Surya, the soul
    • Medicine: heart, circulatory system, thymus
  • Katarina (additional medical information)
    • Additional organs: cerebrum, spine, right eye
    • Pathology: diseases of the heart, blood, circulation, eye problems, weakness, fainting

Katarina added that she has also heard that it is the right eye for males and the left eye for females.

The Sun: Ruler of Leo

  • Dignity (Ruler) of Leo
    • Dignity: You control your circumstances
    • Accidental Dignity in 5th house
    • Detriment: Aquarius
      • Detriment: You are visiting where you must conform
      • Exaltation: Aries
      • Exaltation: Sign it is comfortable in, a friend’s home
    • Accidental Exaltation in 1st house
      • Fall: Libra
      • Fall: Difficulty expressing true nature, someone else’s home where you do not really feel comfortable
    (Definitions: March & McEvers)

David pointed out that the ancients did not use "detriment" - that it was a modern term. Also, the ancients did no associate signs with houses. Because of this, they did not consider accidental dignity and exaltation.

The rulers and keywords brought up much discussion about how signs behave.

  • David and Katarina agreed that the Sun has some difficulty being Aquarius (from being in fall), but disagreed with it being "unconventional". David viewed it more as not having a strong sense of self since it was tied to serving groups. However, it was pointed out that Aquarius is a strongly masculine sign, so women with Aquarius are often seen as unconventional by other women because they may not care as much about feminine things or about others opinions or appearance. Aquarius is more tied to systems and the way everything is interconnected.
  • The Sun being in detriment in Libra brought the statement "you just want to strangle them" from the perception that they have a poorly developed sense of self. The are constantly searching for who they should be.
  • Leo being ruled by the Sun seems to amplifies its effects. It was pointed out that this wasn't necessarily a "good" thing.
  • Katarina mentioned that she feels people with Sun in Leo are more prone to heart problems.
