Meeting: Started at 7:05pm, Subject: 8th house
Attendees: David, Gary, Jay, Michelle, Katarina, Suqui, Melodye, Gina, Stephanie, Melissa, Natalya, and Fei
David started the meeting welcoming everyone. He then announced the changes in the schedule of seminars at Avalon. Details about the Avalon seminars and the new schedule can be found at http://www.avalonastrology.com
Michelle then shared her research on the meaning of the 8th house according to other professional astrologers including Manilius, Al Biruni, etc.
Vedic (adapted from James Braha)
8th house is a water house and thus connected with moksha (spiritual liberation). It's associated with death, insurance, disgrace, misfortune, secret matters, inheritences, joint financies (2nd from the 7th, wealth of husband), the occult, psychology, sexual strength, diseases (especially chronic), psychic ability, spiritual leanings, problems and difficulties.
A strong 8th house, which means the 8th house ruler has dignity and the 8th house isn't afflicted by malefics, gives the following results: long life, lively & energetic person, enjoys wealth from partner, money from wills/legacies/insurance policies, spiritual leanings, good for moksha, powerful intuition/psychic, studies occult subjects
Western (adapted from Deborah Houlding)
According to Houlding, the 8th house "remains the house of death and loss, no matter how pleasantly we wrap that up in digestible phrases like 'personal transformation.'" (Quote from Temple of the Sky)
Traditionally the 8th house was seen as misfortunate because it has no relationship to the ascendant. In traditional astrology, whenever houses are referred to as "weak" or "bad," such as the 8th house, the implication is that those areas are ones which we aren't able to effectively control our environment. The "I," or first house, can't see the house and, thus, can't govern it.
The 8th house as the house of sex is a modern convention. Lee Lehman said it was Alan Leo who brought sex into astrological delineation. The ancients would be mortified because they wouldn't relate death with sex. They put sex in the house of pleasure, the 5th house. Houlding says electing charts with an 8th house emphasis for sexual encounters would strike her as funny if abusive violations and victimization didn't fall within the 8th house's domain.
The 8th house is also called the Gate of Hades, Gate of Hell, Portal of Pluto, all underworld associations.
Other delineations
Manilius: unfortunate
Other classical sources: death and its nature, trial, penalty, loss, weakness
Fimicus: The kind of death. Moon can rejoice here, but only in nocturnal charts. Debilitated and passive because it has no aspect to the ascendant.
Al-Biruni: Death, murder, poison, inheritences, wife's property, expenditure, poverty
Lilly: Death, wills, partner's money, fear and anguish of the mind.
Modern: Income, taxes, legacies, shared feelings, sex, birth and death, big business, insurance, crime
Fei looked up the 8th house using the Huber System (a system of astrology developed by Bruno and Louis Huber). According to this system, the 8th house is death and rebirth. It is the law of give and take, responsibilities towards You.
David made a comment that in classical western astrology each house and each sign are similar to different rooms with a strict boundary between them.
8th house is, money, investments, business, sharing, death of friends or oneself
- occult, psychic, sex, death, inheritance
- business, finance, other people's money
- what we share. Shared resource through money
- has a lot to do with money
- shared resources
- emotional shared resources
(8th house is Scorpio's house {water} which is emotional)
- there is a lot of water connected to shared resources
We looked at Natalya and Jay's charts. We made a comparison between using Placidus houses and using the whole house system. Both the Placidus and whole house systems appeared to make sense for Natalya's chart.
David's last minute explanation of what the 8th house means to him: The 8th house is like a bridge, it is where the person reaches out far away from something, then wants to bring it in and internalize it. It is connected to death because it wants to connect to what lies beyond the veil that separates the hidden world from our world. The 8th house takes a foreign thing, digests it and make it into your own, and thus transforms you.
Meeting was adjourned at 9:00pm
