January 18, 2006 Meeting Minutes

Attendees: Gary, Michelle, David, Gina, Melodye, Suqi and Katarina.

*David announced that the upcoming weekend courses at Avalon on March 25-26 with Don Cerow and Giselle Terri's ethics seminars on April 15-16, and April 22-23 now cost $100. Details about the seminars at Avalon can be found at Avalon's web site: http://www.avalonastrology.com/ Giselle Terri's seminar will give counseling credits for ISAR members.

*David then talked about Don Cerow's expertise on the roots of astrology and how interesting he thinks Don's seminar will be on initial astrology and its interwoven place with history. After these two astrologers, Ernst Wilhelm will come to Avalon and speak about Vedic astrology June 24-25, July 1-2, July 22-23 and July 29-30.

*We discussed Debra Holdings beautiful website called skyscript.com. Her site incorporates traditional astrology from several brilliant astrologers. It is a great site and recommended for a visit at http://www.skyscript.com/.

*Michelle had researched the topic of the evening, and started the discussion on the 9th house by reading different quotes from Manilius, Firmicus, Al Biruni and Lilly. Here follows a brief summary:

The 9th house is traditionally considered to be a benefic house because it trines the ascendant. It is called the house of God and is related to religion in power. The 3rd house is called the house of the goddess and is related to religion out of power (Rob Hands take on it). The interest in religion related to the 3rd house is outside the norm.

The Sun and Moon joys in the 9th and 3rd house respectively and were previously viewed as two chariots rotating in the sky.

The 9th house relates to:
Fate and free will issues
Destiny
Revelations
Dreams and visions
The church
Religion
The Divine
Being in favor of the gods
Respecting the gods
Philosophical understanding
Divination – trying to communicate with God

Higher education – which previously used to be the domain of the church Long distance travel – The Sun takes a year to travel through the zodiac and therefore is related to long journeys. The 3rd house and its relationship to the Moon and its faster movement correlate well with short journeys.

The 9th/3rd axis was considered the houses of the king and queen.

The Sun having joy in the 9th relates to destiny and the decree of the gods.

Firmicus – Social class of men
Al Biruni – travel, religion, faith attainment of knowledge from the stars
Lilly – dreams, visions and learning.

There is a connection between travel and broad vision. You see more and learn new perspectives from traveling. Merchants used to travel as well as pilgrims, thus the connection between the 9th/3rd as well.

We discussed what the meaning of travel, long and short journeys really are. Should a journey be defined by its distance or by the consciousness of the person traveling? A person may feel at home on the other side of the planet, and if so that would be considered a 3rd house journey because he is familiar with the area. Whereas a person traveling 40 miles from his home may consider that a long journey if the new location is unfamiliar and the person is not used to traveling, or leaving his house. Thus this would be a 9th house journey. In other words it depends on the consciousness of the person traveling.

The 9th house represents the archetype of the teacher.

*We discussed a few different charts from the members in the group. Having Neptune in the ninth indicates universal philosophy, connecting all different religious systems and accepting everything from each system. Having Neptune in the ninth may indicate a person being highly receptive.

*David talked about the south and north nodes. The south node is related to existing talents, things that are easy to do. We tend to pull towards the south node and the past. We are drawn to the north node and often want to do north node stuff. Having the south node in the 9th could indicate that wisdom comes easily. There is a gift for 9th house things but it is not the highlighted interest anymore.

*Having the Moon in the 9th is often related to travel and living in other places than then homeland. It can be related to intuitive learning.

*We looked at the ruler of the 9th house to see if we could see the activities of the 9th house in the person's life from the ruler and its position. Gina has a relationship between the 9th and 5th houses and Venus ruling the 9th, and works with art and education.

*We discussed different aspects, like Jupiter/Pluto in conjunction and the need to follow ones own will. Saturn and Pluto in square and how this often relates to power issues with authorities and brings out the darker shades in these situations.

*We discussed Melody's chart in relation to her life and work. Having a t-square between Mars-Saturn and Pluto shows her hardworking nature but also indicates how that has affected her health.

*Finally, David gave his unusual but very interesting view on the relationship between the 9th and 4th house combination. How the 9th house is the external expression of a persons very personal belief system (4th house). There is a relationship between what we believe in and how we see ourselves. We tend to identify ourselves with what we believe in.
